I Tried a New Recipe, and It Wasn’t Really About the Food

Trying something new doesn’t have to mean a big adventure. Sometimes it’s as simple as a new recipe on a regular weeknight.

For this week’s joy experience, I invited you into my kitchen. I’m Italian, and my husband and I have been eating low glycemic, which doesn’t always go well with Italian cooking. So I found a chicken pesto recipe online and decided to give it a try. Watch how it went.

Not Knowing How It Will Turn Out Is the Point

I’ll admit it was a little nerve-wracking having you in my kitchen. I don’t usually cook for an audience. But this is a joy experience, and it’s meant to be fun.

I had no idea whether this recipe would be a total failure or something we’d add to our regular menu. That’s exactly the point. Trying something new wakes you up. It pulls you out of autopilot and into the moment.

Little Things I Love in My Kitchen

Along the way I shared a couple of things I love having at home:

  • A tip from my Pampered Chef days. When you cut an onion, keep the root end and store it in the fridge. It keeps the onion from drying out.
  • Our food cycler. We joined a city program several years ago and still love it. Vegetable peelings and scraps go in, and we end up with a big bin of compost for the garden in spring.

The Verdict

It was really good. Low glycemic Italian is possible, and I recommend it. You’ll find the link to the recipe in the video description on YouTube.

But the real gift wasn’t the meal. It was giving myself permission to play, to try something without knowing how it would turn out, and to enjoy the process.

Your Joy Invitation

Try one new thing this week. A recipe, a route to work, a new café, a class. Something small that lets you feel curious again.

And if you have a favourite low glycemic recipe, especially an Italian one, please share it in the comments on the video. I’m always looking for new ones.
