You Don’t Need to Be an Artist to Feel This Good: A 20-Minute Joy Experience

When was the last time you made something just for the joy of it? No goal, no audience, no pressure to get it right.

For this week’s joy experience, I found a simple watercolour example online that looked easy enough to try, and I gave myself twenty minutes to do it. That was the whole plan. Watch how it turned out, then keep reading.

Simple Supplies, No Pressure

This was completely impromptu. I had a paintbrush and a sketchbook, and it might not even have been the right paper. It didn’t matter. The idea was to be completely in the moment, play with the colours and let myself be absorbed in something creative.

This is not about perfection. It’s about giving your mind something else to focus on. That’s where the relaxation comes from, simply being fully present.

Twenty Minutes and It’s Done

Twenty minutes to gather my supplies, set up and complete something. That’s all I had, and that’s all it took.

Is my painting frame-worthy? No. But that was never the intention. The intention was to step out of a busy day, do something with no rules and no judgment, and see what came of it. I’m happy with it for a first attempt.

Why This Matters More Than It Looks

So many of us stopped creating because somewhere along the way we decided we weren’t “artistic.” But creating isn’t about talent. It’s about giving yourself permission to play, to be curious and to spend a few minutes doing something only for you.

Those small pockets of time are how you reconnect with yourself in the middle of a full life. They remind you that joy is available right now, not someday when things slow down.

Your Joy Invitation

Take twenty minutes out of your day this week to create something. Paint, sketch, colour, arrange flowers, write a poem. Whatever calls to you. Let it be imperfect.

Then come back and share what you made, or how it felt, in the comments on the video. I’d love to see it. Because at the heart of it all, you matter, you are loved, and you deserve time for something that fills you with joy.
