I Picked Up a Keyboard After 40 Years: Rekindling Something You Loved

Have you ever wanted to reconnect with something you loved when you were younger?

For me, it was music. As a teenager in cadets, I played the glockenspiel, and I loved it. Decades later, I decided to rekindle that love. I bought a keyboard and a few beginner books, and I sat down to learn again.

It Wasn’t as Easy as I Thought

I bought the keyboard thinking it would be easy. It wasn’t. There was a learning curve, and I had to practise, practise and practise some more to rebuild that muscle.

The beginner books made it fun. Opening them up and finding songs I could learn fairly quickly, and some I could play and sing along to, brought back a feeling I hadn’t had in a very long time.

Why Rekindling Old Loves Matters

So many of the things that once brought us joy get put on the back burner while we take care of everyone and everything else. Work, family, responsibilities. The things we loved quietly slip away.

The more we disconnect from what is noisy and pulls us away from what matters, and the more we rekindle what brings us joy, the more fulfilment we find from within. We get to rest. We get to enjoy something just for ourselves again.

Reconnecting with music didn’t just give me a new hobby. It reminded me of a part of myself I had set aside, and that inner joy has a way of bringing you back to life.

No Obligations, No Rules, No Expectations

I’m not trying to become a musician. That was never the point. The point was to play, to enjoy and to create something just for the fun of it.

That’s what I want for you too. Permission to enjoy something without needing to be good at it.

Your Joy Invitation

Be courageous and curious. Is there something tucked away in the basement, the garage or the attic that you used to love? An instrument, a sketchbook, a pair of skates, a sewing machine? Dust it off and bring it out to play.

Explore something from your past and just have fun with it. Then tell me in the comments on the video what you rediscovered.
